It’s all go at Melwood

Melwood has had a busy few days!!

We’ve been cask washing like there’s no tomorrow!! That’s not unusual though as Mrsmelwoodbeer usually does a lot of that.  But because we’ve brewed so much lately (can’t stop Stan- he’s a Trojan!) we need to put the beer somewhere!! Added to the fact that Mrmelwoodbeer can’t lift anything just now we are hoping MrsMelwood’s back holds out!

Father Ted went into pubs again this week – for those of you that don’t know Father Ted is a beer made in tribute to MrsMelwood’s dad, Ted Doyle RIP.  Ted was an avid home brewer in his younger days (its where MrsMelwood learned to brew when she was just a little girl – helping dad bottling etc – but not drinking the stuff until she was all grown of course!).  The pump clip features Ted’s photograph from when he was a Submariner ‘durin the War’ (WW2) and his submarine ‘The Votary’.  He was a fabulous bloke who loved quality ale and I’m sure he would have been proud of us doing what we are doing now-only wish he had lived to see it happen 🙁  Who’da thought it dad? You would have loved this!

Melwood Beer Company back to business as usual!

Well its been a busy old few weeks at The  Melwood Beer Company!!

The plumbing work that Stan has been doing is now complete and we have expanded into our new office under the Arch at Stanley Grange so we have more room in the brew house at last!

So it WAS back to business as usual on Sunday when Stan (with Mr & Mrs Melwoodbeer, &  Young John assisting) brewed his inaugural brew ‘Derby Pale’.

Lets get ready to Rumble!  image[2] (2)  Mashing inimage[1] (4)

It was like we were re-learning to use our kit because we no longer use flexible pipes to pump liquor and wort round the system.  It’s now a process of turning taps on and off and the various pumps switching on and off as needed in order to brew our beer

Learning the kit image[4] (2) image[2] image[3] image[5] (3)image[5] (6)

So it went like clockwork! Stan really has done a fantastic job and  I hope Mr & Mrs Melwoodbeer can remember which taps to open and when!  We let Stan be in charge as this is his first brew with Melwood and he’s teaching us good habits already.  Stan has a place for everything and everything has it’s place so hopefully we can adopt this mantra and make sure we’re not searching round for equipment because we don’t know where we’ve put it!!

We were finished by 2.30pm – just enough time to do the Mother’s Day visit and watch the match.  Happy Days!

Plumbing Work continues at Melwood Beer Co

IMG_3119

Update on the plumbing work Stan is doing….

It’s taking a bit longer than expected to get back to brewing at Melwood Towers!

We hope to be back brewing next week as we need to replenish our stocks (which are dwindling because you lovely pubs are selling lots of our beer!) but we need to make sure everything is working well and cleaned to within an inch of its life.

Stan is working hard to get the show on the road and then we can start doing what we do best; brew splendid Melwood Beer Co ales!

Addendum:  It’s been great to hear that Derby Stout has gone down so well  – selling out pretty much wherever it’s gone!  Currently at The Pilgrim Liverpool, The Pheonix Inn St Helens and Prescot Cables Beer Festival if you would like to try it!
