Pride (in the name of Love)

PRIDE Keg Lens

It is with great Pride (sorry about the pun) that Melwood Beer Co are participating in the Liverpool Pride festival this weekend (30th July) in our own small way because we have brewed a beer that is being exclusively served by The Dead Crafty Beer Company on St Georges’ plateau.

The Beer

Using an array of American hops this pale ale is easy drinking and is a nice 5% keg beer.  Dry hopped with Columbus hops which are earthy, citrussy and spicy!

The Festival

Liverpool Pride is an entirely volunteer-led charity that’s trying to combat homophobia and transphobia across the Liverpool City Region and beyond. Their core values are that they are FREE, INCLUSIVE, VISIBLE and all about LIVERPOOL.

So come on down and support Liverpool Pride and local businesses.  All the details about the festival can be found here.

Hope you enjoy the show!

Food Unwrapped filming at Melwood!

Last Thursday the fantastic Jimmy Doherty and Channel 4’s ‘Food Unwrapped’ film crew came to the brewery to film us brewing a special beer!

We were super excited to meet Jimmy and show him around our beautiful brewery and the sun shone on The Kennels almost to order 🙂

We talked to him about our story, how we came to be in this business, what craft beer is to us and he helped us brew a rather interesting brew which has citrus fruits and some great hops in it.

Also we invited a mobile canning company ‘WeCan’ to come and give us a demo of canning our beer!

We put our ‘Instant Karma’ 6.5% into cans and my word it tasted delicious!

It was amazing to see our beer in cans and it was somehow more refreshing, especially on a day as hot as it was!

We had a real insight into how TV programmes are made and filming was a blast.  Jimmy helped us brew and we found him to be a great guy with no side about him, really friendly and easy to talk to.  The film crew were brill too – thanks to Lizzie, Neil & Nicola – their professionalism is clear but it’s in an easy going style that made us feel comfortable.

Look out for the programme featuring us – it’s due to be aired before the end of the year!!

Melwood is off to Sheffield for SIBA Beer X 2015

Just a note to tell you John & Julie are off to lovely Yorkshire tomorrow for the trade experience that is Beer X. We are hoping to learn loads and return with some great ideas for the future!
AND WHEN WE COME BACK…….
It will be full steam ahead for our Shakedown on Saturday 21st March (the Spring Equinox) from 2pm with great beer, music, food and a great venue in The Baltic Social!
Hope all our friends and supporters can join us together with a fair few newbies to Melwood’s now ‘legendary’ shindigs, described by our hosts as ‘lively’!
Hold on to yer ‘ats!

Happy New Year from Melwood!!!

Hello everyone! Happy New Year to you all!!!

Well Christmas/Yule came and went in a flash didn’t it?

We were working right up until about 8pm on Christmas Eve delivering supplies to our favourite pubs so they didn’t run out over the festive period.  John and Stan were very busy between Christmas and New Year as we are working on a new beer doing test brews making sure it all works for a big project that will hopefully come to fruition later this year. (more on that as it develops so watch this space).

Also we have produced the latest in our Icons of Rock Series ‘Moondance’ a fruity pale ale single hopped with Nelson Sauvin Hops which resemble the flavours given in the Sauvignon grape variety. It’s perfect to refresh your palette after all those winter ales and porters you might have been drinking.

Also for your delectation we have been experimenting with hops. We have decided to produce a number of our core beers dry hopped in the cask to alter the flavour and aroma and character of the beer.  Calling them our ‘BOOTLEG SERIES’ we started with Lovelight 3.8% which we dry hopped with Mosaic and left them unfined so they retained a little haze. In very limited editions, this particular beer has been very well received already!

Derby Stout 5.1% makes a reappearance next week and work continues as normal in cask washing etc but let us know if you’d like to try our beers by emailing admin@melwoodbeer.co.uk

Melwood Beer at Paul Askew’s The Art School Restaurant

Mrs Melwood revealed recently that Melwood had been privileged to be chosen to supply bespoke ales to the fabulous new restaurant on the Liverpool Scene – The Art School which opened this month fronted by Chef Extraordinaire Paul Askew.

We thought we would give a bit of a big up to Chef Askew, or ‘Porky Askew’ as he is affectionately called, for choosing our beer for this stunning new restaurant.  In fact Paul and his wonderful Restaurant Manager, James Campbell were so ‘blown away’ by our beer that they just couldn’t choose ONE beer – they chose two to be their signature beers and they liked KNOWSLEY BLONDE so much they wanted to stock it in their amazing bar as well! We are so very flattered that they think so much of our ales and appreciate all they do to promote local producers buy buying locally whenever possible.

The two beers Paul and James chose are aptly named ‘PORKY’S PALE ALE’ and ‘THE ART SCHOOL ALE’ and are available to order with your meal at the restaurant or you can take them away in gift packs should you so wish – together with our cheeky, tasty ‘KNOWSLEY BLONDE’.

We were even more flattered that Paul was only one of two suppliers of our beer at the Liverpool Food & Drink Festival.  We can think of no better endorsement than that. Here is Paul with ‘PORKY’S PALE ALE’ at the festival:

A bit about the beers:

IMG_4823

The exquisite ‘PORKY’S PALE ALE’ 4.0 ABV is a fabulously pale ale which is flavoured with Summit hops giving robust citrus notes of orange, tangerine and grapefruit.  The Summit hop has been mooted by some as the ‘ideal hop’ for the ‘ultimate’ pale ale which is what we think Porky’s Pale Ale is! and it’s Paul’s choice to bear his moniker.

Notwithstanding this, the impeccable, even paler  ‘THE ART SCHOOL ALE’ 4.0 ABV is flavoured with Chinook hops which give similar grapefruit and citrus flavours to Summit but a with an added spicy hint and smell, followed by tropical fruit notes and slight tangy pine – James’ favourite and if I dare say, Mr Melwood’s too!

KNOWSLEY BLONDE:  4.3 ABV  A crisp, refreshing pale ale using only Atlas hops – a hybrid of Brewers Gold and Slovenian Wild Hop –  This beer has a fresh hoppy aroma with a pleasant bitter taste and is fast becoming our best selling beer.  Chosen by Paul and James as worthy to grace the elegant bar of The Art School, we are VERY proud of this beer. It can be found also gracing the bars of the finest pubs in Liverpool and beyond!

KNOWSLEY BLONDE 4.6 ABV – Crisp, refreshing pale ale using only Atlas hops – a hybrid of Brewers Gold and Slovenian Wild Hop. This beer has a fresh hoppy aroma with a pleasant bitter taste.

DINING AT THE ART SCHOOL:

Now unfortunately we haven’t had the opportunity to dine at The Art School yet (shock, horror! Will be rectified asap) but we know a man who has! Just follow this link: http://electrokemistcuisine.weebly.com/blogs/electrokemistry-review-the-art-school-Liverpool to see friend of Melwood, Pedro Cotzier’s, mouthwatering review of The Art School.  We can vouch for the real ale but Pedro will fill you in on the amazing food and service to be found here.

And you can find more information and make your reservation here at The Art School’s website.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your superb meal and the fabulous real ale.

“If The Art School Restaurant is heading for Liverpool’s first Michelin Star The Melwood Beer Company is EXTREMELY PROUD to be a very small part of that!”

Just to let you know that although we are not appearing personally at the Liverpool Food & Drink festival (Costs so high I’m afraid and it way out of our budget this year) we WILL be represented by Liverpool One Bridewell who are serving our bespoke beer ‘Jailhouse Rocks’ on cask and by the fabulous Paul Askew and The Art School Restaurant who will be serving our bespoke bottled beer, ‘Porky’s Pale Ale’ and our very own ‘Knowsley Blonde’ (again in bottles), for your delectation. Please remember them when voting online for the awards http://www.liverpoolfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk/?page_id=166 Both restaurants do so much to promote local producers especially Liverpool producers.
